![]() The Steel-O-Flex model 1000 is the ultimate in light weight portable security. In order for a lock to be effective, it must withstand all forms of attack and be portable enough to use on a daily basis. It makes no sense to make a lock so strong that even Superman couldn't get through it if it's too heavy to carry around. The Steel-O-Flex 1000 is usually the answer to the question "Which lock should I get?" Why? Because it excels in Portability, Security and Ease of Use. ABUS scored it an 8 out of 10 on portability because it only weighs 5 lbs. and can be double coiled to fit nicely in any saddle bag. At 5 pounds, the 1000 is light enough to take anywhere. It scored a 9 out of 10 on security because 7/8" hardened steel shells that surround the 3/8" aircraft steel cable offer exceptional resistance against even lengthy 4 foot bolt cutters. Don't worry about sledge hammers either; the lock body is made of solid steel with double ball bearing locking which is usually found only in high security padlocks. In order for a lock to score high on security, it must be able to lock the bike to an immobile object. It is easy for the 5'8" Steel-O-Flex 1000 to fit between two bikes or around a pole. |
"What's the difference between the 1000 and 950?" Even though the 950 model and 1000 model look very similar, there are many differences which put the 1000 in a class by itself. For starters, the 1000 uses a 3/8" braided inner steel cable where the 950 cable is 5/16". The larger cable provides about twice as much pulling strength as well as extra cutting resistance. The shells that surround the cable are 30% thicker than on the 950 which gives them added integrity against attacks by large bolt cutters. The locking mechanism is now formed out of solid steel rather than die cast as in the 950. The number of key combinations has gone from 30,000 on the 950 to 250,000 on the 1000. The 1000 also locks the mating head more like a high security padlock which uses 2 ball bearings (It literally locks easily in any position) whereas the 950 uses a spring loaded mechanism. It even features a built in dust cover over the keyhole. |
"Why would I want this over the Magnum chain and padlock?" The best answer is "portability". The 1000 gives almost the same protection as the Magnum chain but when it comes to toting the locks around, the 1000 wins hands down. I usually put it this way, "If all you want is maximum lockdown security for storage, then get the Magnum chain. If you are looking for something portable with great security and the ability to lock the bike to something, then get the 1000." We have done many personal tests with conventional tools (picking, bolt cutters, pry bars, Freon, sledge hammers, drills) and have come to the conclusion that the 1000 is the all-around best for portability, security and ease of use. Further, almost all of the motorcycle locks can be keyed to the same key! Availability and lead time may vary depending on the exact set-up you pick. (Most orders will ship the same day by UPS) |
